Asphalt is a complex material which is produced by distillation in crude oil refineries. It is a viscoelastic material which is a near solid at most ambient temperatures. The engineering properties of the asphalt can be adjusted to meet the needs of a wide set of field state conditions.

Traditional hot mix paving uses thermal energy to heat the asphalt cement and aggregate (rocks, sand & dust) so they can be mixed, transported, laid and compacted before the material cools and stiffens.
Emulsified asphalt takes heated asphalt cement and shears it into treated water (with emulsifier chemicals) to allow for the emulsified asphalt to be handled at near ambient temperature. Other performance enhancers such as polymers, adhesion promotors and polymers can be added to optimize engineering the engineering characteristics.
